COME AND WITNESS THIS REPRODUCTION OF THE MOST MEMORABLE MUSICAL SHOWDOWN IN HISTORY:
On the 7th of February 1786,a memorable showdown took place in the Orangerie of the Schönbrunn palace in Vienna, at the personal request of Emperor Joseph II. Vienna's two main opera ensembles - the German singspiel company at the National Theatre and the Italian troupe at the Court Opera - were called to prove their worth. The two works that were chosen to pit both the companies and the genres (German singspiel versus Italian opera) against each other were Mozart's Der Schauspieldirektor and Salieri's Prima la musica e poi le parole - both works were staged at opposite ends of the Orangerie, with two separate stages set up for each troupe. It was Salieri's Prima la musica which won the competition (and the money prize) in the end.
